Types of peanut varieties

Jun 09, 2023

Chinese peanut varieties can be divided into 4 main types:
(1) Ordinary type. Inflorescences alternate on lateral branches, many branches, leaves obovate. Dark green. The plant is erect, clumpy or even creeping. The fruit shape is large. Seeds long cylindrical. The growth period is longer.
(2) Dragon type. Plants are creeping, alternately flowering, hairy with anthocyanins, pod with keel (dorsal) and hook, curved stick. The shell mesh is deep, and the needle is fragile and easy to break.
(3) Pearl bean type. Lateral branches near the main stem, may be continuously produced a number of inflorescence segments, only a few twice branched. Leaf blade oval, light green or green. Plants erect or clumpy. Fruit type is small. Seed peach-shaped. Weak dormancy.
(4)Multi-grain type. Inflorescences may be produced in each lateral branch, rarely twice branched, and inflorescences in the main stem. The plants are tall, and there are obvious anthocyanins on the stems and branches. Pods are clav-shaped, with 3-4 seed pods predominant. Seeds cylindrical.
The varieties that have been cultivated in large areas in China are different, most of which are pearl bean type and ordinary clumping peanut. The varieties produced by crossbreeding between the two types showed certain advantages in production. The variety with high yield, stable yield and the largest promotion area in the world is the American "Flo vine", which is also an inter-type hybrid, accounting for more than 90% of the current peanut production area in the United States. "Makuru red" also has a certain resistance to leaf spot and was once a variety widely used in the world. The resistance of Chinese "Xiekangqing" to peanut bacterial wilt disease was better.
